195th session of the Executive Board

195th session of the Executive Board, Plenary Meeting: Opening Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Amr, Chairperson of the Executive Board

“The dawn of the 21st century was a time for ambitious dreams for the future of humanity.  We can all recall many learned articles alluding to a bright future, based on the absence of the fear of world war and the peaceful co-existence of all. Now that we are firmly into the 21st Century, reality sheds an unfortunately altogether different light. (…)It is mainly through education, which is essentially the acquisition, renewal and use of knowledge, can societies adapt to changes. (…) Education is one of the major drivers and enablers of economic and social development. It also helps to acquire a better understanding and appreciation of other people and the world at large. Education is a social experience through which all individuals learn about themselves and about others and other cultures, and develop interpersonal skills as well as become familiar with science and the ethical uses of science, technology and innovation.”
